The “Pride of Riverside” Maurico Herrera (15-1, 6 KOs) took another step toward regaining his contender status with a one-sided unanimous decision win over rugged journeyman Hector A la Torre (16-10, 5 KOs) after eight rounds Friday night at the Omega Products international in Corona Ca.
Herrera controlled the action from the opening bell, throwing 3-4 punch combination and landing at will to the head and body of A laTorre who was clearly outclassed but made it entertaining as he made time to clown around while taking punishment. Herrera, who's punches were cleaner and crisper than I've seen in a while, looked relaxed and threw with more ease than Victor Ortiz who seemed to have a bit of trouble with A la Torre earlier this year. Herrera made it look easy as he cruised to the 80-72 decision on all three cards.
In the co-feature, Jr. welterweight Christopher Rizo (5-0-1, 3 KOs) remained unbeaten with a first round KO over Luis Alfredo Lugo (11-13-1, 5 KOs) who has become the “tough test” for young, up and coming fighters from the Southern California area. At 1:21 into the first round Rizo landed a left hook to the body that dropped Lugo to the canvas, leaving him unable to continue. Referee David Denkin would reach the count of ten with Lugo still on the canvas trying to catch his breathe.
On the undercard,
Unbeaten Jessie “The KO Kid” Roman (4-0, 3 KOs) was unable to live up to his nickname, taking a four round unanimous decision over an awkward Manuel Delcid (4-2, 1 KO) who continually ran in head first and held on. Despite minimal action by Roman, all three judges would see the bout the same, turning in 39-35 cards. Delcid was penalized twice in the fight for excessive holding. Unbeaten flyweight Miguel Diaz (2-0, 1 KO) scored a first round KO over previously unbeaten Malcolm Franklin (2-1) at the 2:52 mark. Diaz was the aggressor, seemingly looking for the KO from the opening bell. The quicker, slicker Franklin was unable to hold off Diaz as he was caught with a big right hand that sent him to the canvas for the first of two knockdowns. Franklin would beat the count on both occasions only to find himself against the ropes taking punishment on already shaky legs. Referee David Denkin would finally step in and call a halt to the action after a few more head snapping shots by Diaz.
Jr. welterweight Jhon Ortega (1-0, 1 KO) scored a first round KO over Akeem Akinbode (1-4-1, 1 KO) at the 57 second mark of the first round. Ortega, who was in his first fight as a professional dominated from the start, landing at will and rocking Akinbode several times before referee Ray Corona would step in and call a halt to the beating. Akibode did not go down but could no longer effectively defend himself.
East L.A welterweight Emanuel Medina (1-0, 1KO) was successful in his pro debut, stopping over matched John Dunham (1-8-1) at 1:57 of the first round. Dunham walked into a counter right hook that sent him face first into the canvas. Though he was able to beat the count, referee David Denkin did not allow a shaky Dunham to continue.
Quick notes: Jose Reynoso and Hector Serrano who will meet on September 17 at the Double Tree Hotel in Ontario Ca. were also in attendance and joined by Josesito Lopez, off his Friday Night Fights win over Marvin Cordova Jr. Also making an appearance was Kaleisha West, Efrain Esquivias, Kazim Ouma and Julio Diaz.
It's not official until Bobby Chacon steps into the ring and gives the crowd a flurry!

WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1, 16 KOs) scored an eleven round technical decision over previously unbeaten Chad Dawson (29-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday night at the Bell Center, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The fight was stopped in the eleventh after an accidental clash of heads opened a cut above Dawson's right eye. Just moments before, Dawson had Pascal hurt and seemed to be going for the KO. Pascal would survive the late rally and be saved by the ringside doc who would not let Dawson continue due to the cut. Dawson's lack of output in the previous ten rounds made the judge's job easy as they turned in Scores of 108-101, 106-103 and 106-103 all for the hometown fighter.

With the finesse of a drunk stumbling out of the bar at 2 A.M, Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (29-2, 25 KOs) manged to outwork stablemate Manuel Quezada (29-6, 18 KOs) on his way to a unanimous decision win Friday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario Ca.
Arreola controlled the first eight rounds with sloppy aggression, often times throwing wide, off balance punches that left him open to be countered. Quezada showed some signs of life as he began to counter and land a few well placed combination, unfortunately he would get caught with an uppercut for the first of two knockdowns in the ninth round. Quezada would rally back in the next two rounds but lacked the power to keep Arreola from applying the pressure. The Riverside heavyweight, Arreola would drop Quezada once more in the twelfth sealing the deal and the win with scores of 117-108, 118-107 ,118-107.

On Saturday night Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 KOs), the boxing pride of St. Louis, managed to keep his WBC/IBF 140-pound titles and his undefeated record with a hard fought victory over challenger Andriy Kotelnik (31-4, 13 KOs) in front of 9117 hometown fans at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Alexander took a unanimous decision victory after 12, but it was no doubt the toughest test of his career. Alexander took the early rounds but allowed Kotelnik to earn his way back in the second half, making it a lot closer than the judges had it at 116-112.
"I think I did enough to win," Alexander said. "It was an OK performance tonight."

Chris Martin upset promising bantamweight Chris Avalos in the main event on ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME®. In the co-feature, Lateef Kayode knocked out Alfredo Escalera, Jr. to remain undefeated at the Grand Casino Hinckley in Hinckley, Minn.
Usually going by the nickname of “The San Diego Kid,” Martin changed his moniker to “Marvelous” for this fight against Chris “The Hitman” Avalos to symbolize his belief that he’d defeat Avalos, much like “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler defeated Tommy “Hitman” Hearns in 1985. Although Avalos-Martin didn’t play out quite as brutally as Hagler-Hearns, Martin (19-0-2), of San Diego, Calif., proved to be the better fighter for much of their 10-round distance bout. The split decision was scored 98-92 and 97-93 for Martin and 98-94 for Avalos, though the fans and telecast announcers were audibly surprised that Avalos won the card of judge John Mariano of Hugo, Minn.
As the favorite heading into the fight, Avalos (16-1, 13 KOs), of Lancaster, Calif., by way of San Diego, was unable to display his power against Martin’s slick defense and counterpunching. Missing long and wide, the hard-hitting Avalos’ inability to connect opened the door for Martin to take control of the fight. Though not known for his knockout power, Martin used methodical combinations and seemed to grow stronger as the fight progressed. SHOWTIME analyst Steve Farhood attributed Martin’s success to his punches being “shorter, sharper and faster” than Avalos’.
Despite his victory, Martin will not leave with Avalos’ NABO bantamweight belt. Unable to make the contracted weight of 118 lbs., Martin weighed in at 120 pounds and negated the title fight. Title or not, the fight proved the point Martin was trying to make to the boxing community. At Thursday’s weigh in, Martin told the press that after his Friday night bout against Avalos, “You’ll remember Chris Martin.”
