On the evening of Sept. 7, 1996, Mike Tyson, the WBC heavyweight champion, attempted to take Bruce Seldon’s WBA title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. At this point in his career, Tyson’s fights had become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, where the ever present hype of the professional boxing scene would come face to face with the worlds of big business, Hollywood, and hip hop. Sitting ringside was controversial rapper Tupac Shakur. Shakur and Tyson were friends, a feeling of kinship linked them as each rose to stardom from poverty only to be thrown in prison. Following Tyson’s victory, Shakur and “Iron Mike” were to celebrate at an after party, but the rap star never arrived.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for pre-fight hype and some trash talk between fighters before the step in the ring but in this case, Floyd isn't fighting Pacquiao!
Floyd Mayweather Jr. went on an racist rant about Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao last night via Ustream. Mayweather referred to Pacquiao as a midget several times and said that once he beats Pacquiao, he will force him to "make some sushi rolls and cook some rice." He also said "we're going to cook him with some cats and dogs."
I think we can all agree the Mayweather likes to take on this fake persona for the cameras but this time he went too far. Imagine the outcry if the table was turned!
When ask, "then why fight him?", he responded, "We have to give him a chance because we are just human, we are not perfect and he wants to show that he is clean."

Margarito goes South!
After being denied 5-1 by the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday, Antonio Margarito has taken his quest for a Boxing license south to Texas. On Thursday Margarito faxed in his application to state regulator for review. The application is incomplete until they receive a $20 fee which was said to have been sent via mail. Once received, a license "specialist" will review it and either approve or deny it, within 10 days. A hearing will only be needed if the app is denied.
Rafael Marquez's Injury delays Lopez Fight!!
Rumors of a thumb injury suffered by Rafael Marquez during training are now confirmed as his highly anticipated match-up with Juan Ma Lopez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has been pushed back approximately four weeks. It was reported that Rafael's hand was not fractured, but there was a lot of inflammation, making him unable to be ready by the September 18 date. One has to wonder if the competing Golden Boy pay-per-view card Featuring Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora had anything to do with the decision to postpone the fight. Rising stars, Victor Ortiz and Saul Alvarez are also set to appear on the Sept 18 card in Los Angeles.
Bradley vs Alexander?
In the midst of big fights NOT happening, it looks like one much anticipated match up WILL. Its being reported that Don King and Gary Shaw have agreed on terms of a deal for Devon Alexander to fight Timothy Bradley on Jan. 29 on HBO. There has been no official word and the fighters themselves have not signed off on the proposed bout.
