On Monday, Oscar De la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions held a press conference at El Mercado Restaurant in the heart of East L.A to announce their newest edition to the Golden Boy Roster, 18 year old amateur standout Frankie Gomez.

Being from East Los Angeles and Sharing the February 4th birth date with Oscar are just a couple of reasons why comparisons to the Golden Boy are Already being made.

"Frankie Gomez, who was born on my birthday, February 4th, he was born when I was winning my gold medal in Barcelona, he was born in the same year. We Feel there are a lot of similarities with the way we grew up, how we grew up. We both have strong ties to our families, we both have a great work ethic, the only difference is at this age he is a lot better than I was" Said De La Hoya

Aside from the obvious reasons a fighter is chosen, it was the passion for the sport that caught the eye of Oscar.

"What I saw was the passion, the passion that he has for the sport, the passion in his eyes and not many fighters have that passion."

The camera shy Gomez took time to thank god and his coaches, Hector Ibarra and Ronnie Rivota who echoed the sentiments that "This is a dream come true"

"Growing up I always looked up to what Oscar De La Hoya did in the ring, so to be with Golden Boy Promotions is a dream come true for me," said Gomez "I'm humbled by this moment, but excited at the same time, because I'm ready to begin my pro career and show the world what I can do when the headgear comes off and the bell rings."

Gomez will make his Pro debut on the under card of Bernard Hopkins vs Roy Jones jr. but will likely find a home on "Solo Boxeo Tecate" which Golden Boy Promotions and Spanish network Telefutura will bring back this year starting April 30th. There will be subtle differences in the formatting to bring the events to a broader audience. One being later start time of 8:30PM from the original 6:30PM and will now be available in English as well as Spanish.

" Want to take our Fight Night Club model and implement it into the Telefutura shows, Sexier, fun, energetic but most importantly, Great fights" said De La Hoya.
